Earlier this month a rumor surfaced claiming Apple would have to delay the launch of their redesigned iMacs due to an issue with a welding process. Although a second report citing unnamed sources denied those claims, Apple has now come forward with a solid release date for the popular all-in-one.
According to an official announcement on the company’s website, the 21.5-inch iMac will become available this Friday, November 30, through the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores and select authorized resellers. The 27-inch model will be available for order through the Apple Online Store and will begin shipping in December, as originally planned, although no specific date has been provided yet.
Even though Apple will be able to get the redesigned iMacs on time, the company has already warned that due to supply-chain issues they won’t have enough of these to go around. CEO Tim Cook said during the last earnings call that they expect a significant shortage for at least three months while production ramps up.
The 21.5-inch iMac starts at $1,299 with a 1920x1080 IPS display, a 2.7GHz quad-core Core i5, 8GB of RAM, a GT 640M and a 1TB HDD. Spec it with a 2.9GHz Intel Core i5 and an improved graphics card, and you’ll need $1,500. Meanwhile, the 27-incher will set you back $1,799 for a 2560x1440 IPS panel, a 2.9GHz quad-core Core i5, 8GB of RAM, a GTX 660M and 1TB of storage -- or $1,999 with better processor and graphics.
Both new iMacs will offer the option for hybrid storage -- or a "Fusion Drive," as Apple calls it. You'll be able configure the systems with 128GB of flash storage and 1TB or 3TB of mechanical storage, and this combo will act as a single volume, but software will logically place your apps on the SSD and documents on the HDD.
