AMD quarterly results beat expectations but stock drops

(Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc posted a 6 percent decline in personal computer chip sales, dampening hopes that its fast-growing gaming-console business can take up the slack and sending its shares 7 percent lower.

Steam Machines to feature Nvidia, AMD and Intel GPUs


Last week, Valve revealed specifications for prototype Steam Machines that will be sent to 300 lucky beta testers, with all systems featuring Nvidia graphics cards. Despite Nvidia dominating prototype Steam Machines, Valve confirmed to Maximum PC that when the SteamOS-powered systems hit the shelves, they will feature hardware from AMD and Intel as well.

AMD reduces GlobalFoundries wafer order, penalized $320 million

AMD’s prospects just keep taking a turn for the worse as we approach 2013. The chip maker has suffered from a slow CPU market and increased pressure from rival Intel which has subsequently forced them to reduce their wafer purchase commitments with GlobalFoundries.

AMD Radeon HD 8000 series could be delayed until Q2 2013

AMD’s “Sea Islands” graphics card lineup is set to arrive as the Radeon HD 8000 series in the second quarter of 2013, according to supply chain sources talking to DigiTimes. The Taiwanese website says Southern Islands’s successor was originally scheduled to land by the end of the year, but was pushed back as AMD focuses on its ongoing business reorganization. Other reports had pegged the launch for Q1 next year, which would have been in line with this year’s retail launch of the Radeon HD 7970 in January.

Chinese chip maker hopes to rival Intel, AMD, ARM with custom CPU

China is preparing to unveil details about an 8-core processor designed and developed entirely within the country. The CPU is expected to eventually challenge powerhouses AMD, ARM and Intel in the PC, server and supercomputer categories.

Jon Peddie Research (JPR) has published its third quarter statistics for the graphics processor market showing weak seasonal performance with shipments down 1.45% quarter-over-quarter and 10.8% year-over-year. The underwhelming results were largely blamed rocky PC shipments, which stems from factors including ongoing economic woes in the US and abroad as well as the increasing popularity of tablets.

Titan supercomputer displaces IBM's Sequoia as world's fastest

The U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is now home to the world’s fastest supercomputer, according to the latest Top500 list. Aptly dubbed Titan, the Cray-built system knocked off IBM’s Sequoia after only six months in the top position, with a performance of 17.59 petaflops on the Linpack benchmark, or quadrillions of calculations per second, beating the previous record of 16.32 petaflops.
