Nexus 5 expected to debut October 31 in the US
The anticipation and excitement surrounding the upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone and Android 4.4 Kitkat software update have reached a feverish pace, especially when you consider the phone briefly appeared on the Google Play store last week. And if the latest rumors prove to be true, consumers won’t have to wait much longer for the device as the latest suggests it will launch on October 31 in the US.

DARPA announces competition to build automated cyber defense system with $2M grand prize
The Pentagon has launched a competition calling on software developers to build a fully automated cyber defense system. The Cyber Grand Challenge will run for the next three years which should give contestants plenty of time to meet all of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) requests.

Slingbox now supports AirPlay streaming to Apple TV, Blockbuster On Demand and more
The SlingPlayer Mobile app for iOS now supports AirPlay meaning users can stream live television directly to Apple’s set-top box. The feature could be useful in the event you want to stream content from one TV in your home to another without needing a second set-top box from your cable or satellite provider or if you have a friend or family member willing to share their cable subscription.

Samsung and Corning have announced a plan to strengthen on their product and technology collaborations with “a series of strategic and financial agreements” that will see the South Korean electronics firm own a 7.4% stake in the Gorilla Glass maker. The two have been involved in one way or another for over 40 years through equity investments, product development and commercialization initiatives, according to the press release.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was the highest paid chief executive officer of any North American company in 2012. The social network boss received $2.28 billion in compensation last year with nearly all of his yearly earnings coming as a result of exercising share options when the company went public.

Research team designs and builds a disk drive that stores data for a million years
A research team out of the Netherlands has produced a storage medium that can last a million years. Standard magnetic disk drive storage, which was introduced nearly 70 years ago by IBM, has improved significantly over the years in many ways, but the duration in which the data can be stored largely remained the same. Current disk drives offer about a decade of reliable data storage.
TSA now starts its security check of passengers before they arrive at the airport
Newly released documents reveal the Transportation Security Administration is preparing to broaden its pre-screening process for airline travelers. The agency already cross-references flight manifests with a terror watch list but according to the New York Times, the TSA can now search a number of government and private databases before you even arrive at the airport – a level of pre-screening that was previously only used for those flying into the US.
